ABOUT THE ARTIST

Areesha Khalid is a British-Pakistani, Architect and Designer. She creates art centred around culture and nostalgia experienced through spaces. The fusion of both Western and South Asian culture is an integral part of her identity and her art is an expression of both the conflict and harmony that comes with this. Illustrating aspects of her South Asian heritage that she feels closest to but also most disconnected from. She hopes her work can ignite some feeling of nostalgia and bring some warmth to your homes.

ABOUT THE ART

What medium are these prints?
The prints are a form of digital art, created using a mixture of collaging techniques, hand drawing on procreate and 3D modelling and rendering. All skills learnt during Ari’s 7+ years of studying and working in Architecture in London.

What do you mean by collage?
Collage is an art technique that involves creating a new artwork by manipulating, cutting, reassembling and editing together different materials into a cohesive new image. Some examples of famous historical collage artists include Picasso and Matisse.

Where do you get images for your collages from?
90% of the imagery Ari uses is taken by herself during one of her many trips to Pakistan and beyond or her family and friends. Some imagery is sent by brands and clients for collaborative work e.g. Zara Shahjahan. The other 10% is taken from stock images as well as other internet sources. For the human figures, Ari ensures the face is blurred and often makes use of AI for ethical reasons. Any fashion campaign models that have been used in the past, the brands have been tagged and credited for these.

Is it legal and ethical to use 10% of online images?
Collage art is a recognised form of art in the UK where Ari is based. According to UK laws, as long as the art is “transformative” in nature, whereby the original image is manipulated enough / only a small section is taken from it whereby it takes on an entirely new life of its own, it is legal to do so. However, there is always subjectivity when it comes to this of course and will vary from case to case. That is something for a court to judge but Ari is always open to any conversation and removing anything from her work upon request of the original photo owner if it ever came down to it. She believes in maintaining ethical and legal art practices which is why she has consulted a legal professional and continues to follow their advice in order to continue making her art.
